WHAT CAR ? A BRITISH CAR

What Car Awards...

The winners of the 'What Car? 2011 Awards' have just been announced, and being British we're proud to see a good few British names amongst the ones at the top, nabbing winning titles this year.

2011 was host to the 34th annual 'car Oscars' as they've been dubbed, allowing a top panel of judges to scrutinise, criticise and compliment many domestic and luxury cars in order to give consumers who are looking to buy, a fair view of motors out there on the roads today.

Like every other industry in the world fighting for consumer attention in times where the recession is still affecting some, the car scene also are stepping up their game with manufacturers going bigger, better and brighter than ever before. 2011 has seen all the top car names out there (including Audi, Nissan, Toyota... etc.) bring out new vehicles this year making this competition an inevitably tough one.

What is it that the average consumer is looking for in a vehicle? Size? Colour? Horsepower? How much attention they'll get when driving it? Well clearly, it is a case of 'each to their own' but maybe the winners of the 'What Car? 2011 Awards' will benefit potential buyers with the knowledge of these results in their bid to decide what exactly it is that they're looking for.

Some of this year's winners include:

Best Family Car - Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 140 Zetec
Best Ulta-Low-Carbon Car - Nissan Leaf
Best Coupe Winner - Audi TT 2.0 TFSI 211 Sport
Best Luxury Car Winner - Mercedes-Benz S-Class S350 CDI Bluetec
 Best 4x4 - Land Rover Discovery 3.0 SDV6 XS
Best Performance - Ferrari 458 Italia

But of course, right at the start we did mention there were some British names at the top too this year, right? Well we're not the kind to lie to you. British winners included the Birmingham-made Jaguar XF that scooped the award for Best Executive Car (with 'What Car?' donning it as a "game-changing" vehicle) and the Nissan Qashqai, built in Sunderland that won the overall Used Car of the Year Award. We may not be too good at doing well in the Eurovision Song Contest year after year ("UK? Nil point") but as a country we do have other things to be proud of at least... and cars are pretty damn important, you must admit, so we're happy! (*Kudos Cars Team grin enthusiastically encouraging you British folk to do so too*).

Until next year it is then, and maybe we'll see even more British titles at the top. Who ever said patriotism was dead?
